The Future is Near: Autonomous Vehicles
Taking a look around, our technology has played a major role in our day-to-day lives. The cell phones, its apps, television streaming, learning thermostats, Bluetooth activated door locks…it’s just a matter of time before our cars got another makeover
I find it hard to believe that in just two short years, we’re going to see autonomous vehicles be in their development phase. While they won’t be on the streets yet, GM Canada plans to have a fleet of self-driving Chevrolet Volt electric vehicles at their Technical Centre in Warren, Michigan for testing in 201
Through GM’s testing program, their employees will reserve a Volt using a car-sharing app, then select a destination. Their autonomous technology will bring the vehicle to its destination and park itself. This testing phase is supposed to provide data and lessons to accelerate GM’s technical abilities in further developing self-driving vehicles.
The Conference Board of Canada has suggested that autonomous cars could save Canadians $65 billion per year through less congestion, less fuel and few collisions and fatalities. Do you think you can count and depend on an app to drive you and your families around town? Seems so futuristic, but it looks like these cars are coming whether we like the idea or not.
It will be interesting to see how safe these vehicles will actually be, but in the meantime, let’s continue to practice safe driving and use common sense on our own roads as we break into the weekend.
Happy Tuesday, all!
